Abstract: Recent advances in 3-manifold topology provide powerful tools to construct finite covers of 3-manifolds with given properties. To what extent can we learn about the fundamental group of a given 3-manifold by looking at all its finite quotients? Properties that can be learned this way are called profinite properties. In this talk, I will survey on some recently confirmed profinite properties and discuss some open questions in this topic.

Speaker Introduction: 刘毅教授 Yi Liu，于2012年在美国加州大学伯克利分校数学系获得博士学位，现任北京国际数学研究中心副教授。刘毅教授是一位杰出的青年拓扑学家，著有一系列优秀工作包括在Invent.Math，JAMS等国际顶尖杂志文章3篇，在国际上也是展露头角的新一代领袖。
