Abstract: Can we understand the moduli spaces of maps from curves? This talk will address this question, focusing on one-dimensional targets and revisiting classical results such as the ELSV formula and the Gromov–Witten/Hurwitz correspondence. I will also explain how nearly all aspects of the one-dimensional story generalize to higher dimensions, and why the resulting picture is nevertheless not entirely satisfactory.
