About IASM
The Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (IASM), inaugurated on December 17, 2017, is designed to offer a tranquil and stimulating environment in which mathematicians worldwide get together to work, think, and exchange ideas. Based in Hangzhou, a city renowned for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, IASM welcomes about one hundred visiting scholars annually from some fifty universities and research institutions.
IASM is excited to host up to 10 workshops annually in collaboration with the Banff International Research Station (BIRS), with the number increasing to 12 starting in 2027. All participants are welcome to share their ideas at IASM.
Travel
Do I need a visa in order to come to IASM-Hangzhou?
Yes. You need a visa from the Chinese government in order to enter the country as a visitor to IASM-Hangzhou. For those who intend to come to China for exchanges, visits, study tours, and other activities, you may apply for the Type F visa. Please refer to the website of Chinese Visa Application Service Center for details. https://www.visaforchina.cn/.

Where can I find information for travel funding?
Although IASM provides meals and accommodation to workshop participants free of cost, you will not be subsidized in travel costs to and from the workshop venue.

What are my transportation options for getting to the hotel?
From Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) 萧山国际机场
Option 1: Taxi → Direct to hotel (35km, ~45 minutes, 130-180 RMB)
Option 2: Take metro Line 7 from Xiaoshan International Airport 萧山国际机场 to Jianshesan Road 建设三路 → Transfer to metro Line 2 to Panshui 潘水 → Take bus No. 719/745/745B from Panshui 潘水 bus stop to Shanli Renjia 山里人家 → Walk for 15 minutes (~2 hours in total, 9 RMB)
Option 3: Take metro Line 19 from Xiaoshan International Airport 萧山国际机场 to West Lake Cultural Square 西湖文化广场 → Transfer to metro Line 1 to Xianghu 湘湖 (~1 hour and 20 minutes, 7 RMB) → Take a taxi (11km, ~25 minutes, 35-50 RMB)
From Hangzhou East Railway Station 杭州东火车站
Option 1: Taxi → Direct to Hotel (25km, ~45 minutes, 90-120 RMB)
Option 2: Take metro Line 4 from East Railway Station 火车东站 to Qianjiang Road 钱江路 → Transfer to metro Line 2 to Panshui 潘水 → Take bus No. 719/745/745B from Panshui 潘水 bus stop to Shanli Renjia 山里人家 → Walk for 15 minutes (~1 hour and 40 minutes in total, 8 RMB)

From Pudong International Airport (PVG) 浦东国际机场
Option 1: Taxi → Direct to hotel (222km, ~3 hours, 800-1200 RMB)
Option 2: Coach Bus → Direct to Hangzhou East Railway Station (~3 hours, 130 RMB) → Follow the directions above from Hangzhou East Railway Station to the hotel
Option 3: Metro + Train + Bus → Take metro Line 2 (~1.5 hours, 8 RMB) to Hongqiao Railway Station 虹桥火车站(~1.5 hours, 8 RMB) / Take Airport Link Line 市域铁 to Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 虹桥2号航站楼 and then walk to Hongqiao Railway Station 虹桥火车站 (~40 minutes, 26 RMB) → Follow the directions above from Hongqiao Railway Station to the hotel
Accommodation
For how long can I stay at the IASM-Hangzhou?
Participants in 5-day workshops can check into IASM-Hangzhou after 2 pm on Sunday and typically remain until 12 pm Friday the same week.
If you plan to arrive before Sunday or intend to remain in IASM-Hangzhou beyond Friday, please note that you will be expected to book and pay for your accommodation.
What sorts of amenities are available in my room?
Towels, soap, a hair drier, a mini-refrigerator, a desk, and an Ethernet port for personal computers and WiFi connection are provided.
What facilities does the hotel have?
A gym center, an indoor swimming pool and a coffee shop are available.
Meals
Where and how do I get my meals?
Your meals from Sunday dinner to Friday lunch will be covered once you are registered for the workshop. Meals are served in the Dining Hall at the workshop venue or hotel. Please feel free to ask IASM staff if you fail to locate the Dining Hall.
Can I request special meals at IASM-Hangzhou if I have dietary restrictions?
Please feel free to tell us in advance if you are a vegetarian/vegan or if you have other dietary restrictions/allergies. You can leave the message about your dietary requirement in “Special Information” section on Banff interface or contact us directly at shenyuzhou@zju.edu.cn. Based on your needs, for lunch, we will prepare special lunch boxes for you; for dinner, we will ask the dinner restaurant to prepare the food acceptable for you and label the food ingredients.
Guest
Can I take a guest with me?
Yes. Please register the number of guests on the Banff interface and let us know (by sending email or leaving message in “ Special Information”) if you have special requirements for the room type. We will arrange the rooms accordingly. Please note that extra fee should be paid if you need to add a bed or upgrade the room type.
What are the costs for guests?
There is no extra charge for your guest’s stay if your guest shares the room with you and does not need to add a bed or upgrade the room type. In that case, 1 guest’s breakfast is also covered.
We will cover your meals; however, your guest should pay whatever rates the Dining Hall or hotel charges if he/she wishes to join you for lunch and dinner at the Dining Hall or hotel.

What are some good places to visit in Hangzhou and its surroundings?
All workshop lectures are held in the Lecture hall at Academic Island which is in the Xianghu Tourist Resort. Xianghu Tourist Resort, one of the birthplaces of Chinese Civilization, is well-known for its picturesque scenery and is regarded as the sister lake with West Lake. It is a must-go attraction to embrace age-long history and Chinese culture in Hangzhou.

What are the electrical systems and plug types used in Hangzhou?
China operates 220-volt electrical systems, so you will need a voltage transformer/adaptor for your electrical appliances if they operate on a different voltage.
Where can I exchange currencies?
It is well worth visiting the banks in the country where you are based as they often exchange currencies without charging a commission fee. Barring that, there are currency exchange desks in most major airports, so you can convert your money to RMB.
